WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Heat pumps can be an excellent solution for achieving both year-round comfort and energy efficiency in your home. While they gained popularity in the 1970s, earlier versions of these systems were primarily suitable for milder climates. However, with modern heat pumps, particularly variable speed mini-split heat pumps, they have become a reliable and sustainable option, offering high-performance heating and air conditioning for homes in any climate, including extremely cold temperatures. This system consists of an indoor air handler, which may or may not be ducted, and an outdoor condenser unit.

To provide heat, the outdoor heat pump absorbs heat energy from the outside air and transfers it to the indoor unit via refrigerant. When the refrigerant reaches the indoor coil, it is compressed, significantly increasing its temperature. Warm air is delivered to the room by blowing air over the heated coil using a fan. This heating process is much cleaner and environmentally friendly than burning fossil fuels, as it produces zero emissions. When air conditioning, the process reverses; the indoor evaporator unit absorbs and sends the room’s heat energy to the outdoor unit compressor. The vapor is condensed back into a cold liquid that cools and returns to the indoor unit coil. The fan blows across the cold coil to provide cool air.
